History

Fritznel J. Milfort, the founder of Canteens was in Haiti when the catastrophic earthquake occurred on January 12, 2010.

Since 1997, Fritznel Milfort has fed the poor and hungry in Haiti. His normal itinerary would also include an additional week to relax in anticipation of a busy workload in his private accounting practice upon returning to the United States.

The earthquake struck just two days before Mr. Milfort was scheduled to travel back to the U.S. He was staying at a village outside of Port-au-Prince when a friend invited him out to see a home in Port-au-Prince.

While Mr. Milfort was traveling back to his home in the village, the 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the island. At the time, he was unaware of the catastrophic event and the physical, emotional and spiritual impact it would have on the people and many of the children, who became orphans from the days’ event. To him that was blessing number one.

Mr. Milfort was providing support for some homeless children staying at his home, one of whom was sick with fever and resting in bed. Upon returning from Port-au-Prince, Mr. Milfort arrived to find his two-story home totally destroyed by the earthquake. Taking time to assess the days’ events, Mr. Milfort also counted his blessings. The orphan child escaped from the second floor unharmed, blessing number two and his reluctance to leave his home ultimately saved his life, blessing number three.

The next day, all the needy kids including adults showed up in his front yard looking for food and assistance. Knowing that he must act and fulfill the needs of those around him, the mission of Canteens for the Children of Haiti was born.

Canteens for the Children of Haiti, Inc.

Canteens for the Children of Haiti, Inc. is a nonprofit, charitable relief organization that delivers daily meals and other necessities to many disadvantage children in La Plaine Haiti.
